Perhaps you are a student or a teacher of foreign language. Perhaps you are getting in touch with your roots and you want to watch DVD titles in the language of your grandparents. Or maybe you just like to watch films from other countries. You buy a movie, put it in your DVD player, and receive the error a "Wrong Region '.

What do you do?

The popular Philips DVP642 DVD player can be easily made Region-free (or "regionless') with just a few clicks of the remote. This elegant silver-gray unit is available at your local local Wal-Mart and many other outlets electronics. In Canada, it can be found for under $ 60. Sometimes it is sold region free straight out box (although the packaging will state which is a specific region only).

This Phillips product fits easily in a small space. It is approximately 10 inches deep by 17 inches wide and less than 2 inches high. It comes with a user manual, quick start guide, cables audio and video, and remote control complete with batteries.

The unit plays many formats: MPEG4, DivX 3.11/4.x, 5.x. and 6.x; DVD + R / + RW, VCD, SVCD, Picture CD, CD-MP3 and CD-R/RW.

Some of its features include: progressive scan, 4 x video upsampling (54 MHz), and 192 kHz/24 bit audio DAC.

The mechanical rotation mechanism is ultra-quiet, picture quality is excellent, as audio. An added bonus: once you enter the region hack, the DVD will automatically adjust for NTSC / PAL television signals.

Region Hack

• Set up the DVD using the quick start guide.
• Playing a DVD title to your default region just to make sure that your machine is working properly.
• Remove the DVD and power down during few seconds.
• Turn the power on and open the DVD tray.
• Wait until the NO DISC message appears.
• Open the drawer DVD.
• Enter the following codes then via the remote: 7 8 9 OK 0 (seven eight nine zero OK) The screen displays information showing the default region and the new.

The '0 'in the numerical sequence above refers to the region. Zero is regionless, and should work with almost any DVD. If for any reason you want to limit your DVDs to another region, enter a another number instead of '0 '. For example, to play only region 2 DVDs, you must enter: 7 8 9 OK 2.

Note: entering codes via remote control will not void your warranty. A hardware hack. Although this trick has been used by thousands of users around the world, trying to your own risk.
