One reason for the increasing popularity of digital cameras has been the decline in median price. Furthermore, the increased quality and improving technology. Camera phones have been a huge success, with unit sales rising from three million in 2001 to 500 million in 2006. It is estimated by some industry experts that their are close to 1 billion camera phones in the world now.
Another reason for the growing popularity of these large gifts is the growing popularity of online photo sharing and social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Flicker. These sites allow people to do Upload your photos and show them to your friends instantly. Now, some people are actually buying cameras specifically to take pictures and send them to these sites.
That the film is not an additional expense and there is no wait to develop the film also seems to be a reason for the growth in popularity.
The three largest digital camera sales in the U.S. for the third quarter of 2007 are Canon in 23% of the market, Sony 18% and 15% with Kodak. The popularity of the brand Canon PowerShot one of the main reasons for the company is at the top. Just a couple of years ago, Kodak was the leading vendor in the U.S., but sales dropped in comparison with sales of Sony and Canon.
So whatever the season is or who you are buying a gift for a digital camera is a good choice and a good bet to put a smile on the face of the receiver of the gift.
