Digital Cameras External Flash

DSLR is a pity for me? (from "higher end" digital cameras)?
I like photography and am familiar with the functions the camera, but I have not shot many times so I have no intentions of spending additional lenses. Also, I really do not like having a flash external and bulky size. I'm currently using a compact and I am getting the onsidering Canon400d. Given the high price of a DSLR, I was wondering if there is some kind of in between camera that is most appropriate? (aka compact, but allows more control) Btw, a DSLR is even better if used as a point-and-click?
Have you considered Canon G9? Since a DSLR has a larger sensor you will get slightly better results. However, IMO, would be a waste of money to have all the capabilities and ever use it. Of course, only you can make that decision.
