good brands of digital cameras?

What are some good brands of digital cameras? my whole family shares a canon and works well. the photos are always very dark. I have a camera. a Nikon. but it doesn't work that good. photos are always blurry no matter what! This photo is the Nikon D80. If you want a great altnerative for less $ 500 goes to the Nikon D40. Do not bother with the D40 or D60 though.
