Is it possible to know when a product was made from his serial number.?

Hello, I bought a camcorder Sony last week of the comet as a gift. My friend told me that it is defective, I can not find the receipt, thus helping Comet habit. I took it to the store and told an assistant that is an old model, I can prove from my bank statement that I paid Comet for the camera, but so far they refuse to believe that this is a current model – anyone know if the series is not Sony's (on a sticker under the camera) to record when it was made / etc exported? Any help would be great that I do not want to spend another 300 € Thanks a million Janey

Sony should know. And if you have registered the product, then they should be able to tell you when the product was registered.
