How do you measure the image sensor of a camcorder 3 CCD's?

Looking to buy a new camcorder and am confused by specifications for image sensors. For example, a Canon HV40 has a 1/2.7 "sensor is a single CMOS sensor. In comparison, a Panasonic HD250 has a CCD sensor is 1/4.1 THREE. "Because it's 3 CCD, does that mean it's 1/4.1" multiplied by three (for each CCD)? [1/4.1 "x 3 = 3 / 4" image sensor?] Or do 3CCD means three filters (each color) to three sensors?

3CCD means there are three discrete image sensors – one for each color. Multi-chip (should) mean better color fidelity while the chips larger ones have better low light / low noise performance. This is all completely moot if you and your audience can not make difference (or do not care)!
