What is the difference between the different types of camera lenses? 18-55, 55-200, etc., etc..?

I'm buying a camera, and I have to buy the lens separately (the D50 to be exact). How do I find out what lenses are different? I know it has something to do with the distance between the mirrors and lenses, or something, but what is the effect that each type has in the picture? What does it mean?

Smaller numbers mean a wider viewing angle and can usually meet lighter. Higher numbers are more telephoto and usually require more light. It is difficult to hold the hand-lens more than 200. The stock lens that comes with a 35mm camera is about 55. would a 18-55 lens from wide angle to normal and a 55-200 would from normal to telephoto and is much larger and heavier.
