DSLR Nikon or Canon DSLR?

I am an amateur photographer who is looking for a DSLR, lightweight and fully manual. A friend has a Nikon D60 (I think) and really like but I prefer the Canon. I am looking to buy a Canon EOS 1000D DSLR. Does anyone have one of these cameras and would be able to shed some light? I would take it out to nightclubs (as I'm hired as a photographer of the club) and then only for general use. I would consider a Pentax, but my heart is set on a Canon. I now have a 35 mm Pentax SLR Lens Sigma. Or if you could recommend a good Canon DSLR, looking to stay fairly close in price from $ 1000 range. Any advice would help.

For the money I would take a serious look at T1i Canon Rebel (500D). The T1i (about $ 900.00 for the kit with 18-55mm) will offer more bang for the buck and has more features than the Nikon. The T1i can also record HD video up to 1080p. Take a look a the link below for a major overhaul of the camera. The lens 18-55mm should be enough for what you want to do. If you discover later that you need a lens with higher focal length, you can buy the third lens manufacturers parties for a very reasonable price compared to OEM lenses. Another option is to buy the body only ($ 720.00) and buy a lens like the Tamron Zoom Super Wide Angle 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro for $ 290.00 with a mail in rebate $ 60.00 by the end of December. So for the T1i, $ 720.00 for the body and $ 230.00 for the Tamron lens, the total cost would be $ 950.00, only $ 50.00 plus kit T1i with 18-55mm Canon. Since you mentioned the night work I look for a nice prime lens with an opening low as Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM for about $ 365.00. Even better would be EF f/1.4L USM Canon 35mm, but this lens cost about $ 1,460.00. If you're not in a hurry and want to consider a Pentax (can use your existing lens), they have a new model coming out in October, which is a bargain relative to its characteristics. The KX single lens kit (with a Pentax DA L 18-55mm) will go to $ 649.95, in two editions by adding a lens Pentax DA L 50-200mm zoom or Pentax DA L 55-300mm zoom lens will go for $ 749.95 and $ 849.95 respectively.
