The reason you need to consider the format of your camera is the fact that it will impact how a lens of a given focal length behaves. By way of illustration: a lens makes an image that is not "long" or "broadband", but it seems very naturally with the way our eyes see is known as "normal" a normal lens on a 35mm camera would be about 50mm. A 50mm lens on a 4×5 camera would be incredibly large and, of course. On a 5×7 camera or greater than would be useless. a normal lens for a 4×5 camera is between 180mm and 150mm.

Another thing that is very important, especially when very large-format 8×10 and even more – is lens cover. The measurement for this is usually presented as the image circle of a lens. For example, if you had to expose a sheet of film about 30 cm from corner to corner, then you need to make sure that the lens you want to use could produce an image circle of 300 mm. To make you will not be leaving parts of their unexposed film you need to take this into serious consideration, and keep in mind that the image circle can change depending on the length of the bellows and the distance you are focusing.
