Optical zoom changes the focal length of the lens and so the image is captured on the sensor full regardless of the zoom. In digital zoom, image is "cropped" or reduced to mimic higher focal length. The image is cropped a small portion of the sensor and culture depends on the digital zoom used. This results in lower image resolution. The optical zoom is always better.
