Make a documentary of students?

For school, we participate in a competition called National History Day, where you must create a project. I decided that I'm probably going to make a documentary. What would I need to do. I think I could get a camera from school, or if you know any cheap digital camcorders, please tell me. Also, do you have reccomendations for any movie inexpensive making good software for the documentary of the school. And finally, what are the ways that I can make a professional documentary, and do well in the competition. Thank you very much!
