Apple Camcorders

Around 1:30 pm yesterday my Twitter TweetDeck started illuminating the presentation of Steve Jobs, the new iPod nano. Almost all were jubilant, tweets, composed Loose leaves and iPodnano # #, as follows:

"The time to replace my Nano with a flip"

"New video # iPod nano! Say goodbye to the camera flip # video. You just go out.

"Mourning # actually flip soon now. killed an entire industry in one fell swoop "

"# iPodnano now has video and microphone * waves bye ….. bye flip to # * so true! a new wave of ground products by Apple "

There was even one or two hand dryers:

"This Coming from someone who is a true fan # flipvideo. But, damn. "

Introducing Steve, he showed a photo of a rollover said goodbye to her. He noted that you can, for about the price of a UltraHD Flip, get a device that not only plays iTunes, but equipped with a FM radio and a pedometer. It can sync up your special Nike shoes (kit and shoes not included), and she earns 8 hours of video! And that "YouTube friendly."

Well, guess what. I did the calculation. An hour of video per gigabyte tells you the resolution. The iPod Nano shoots 640×480 resolution. This VGA – not HD, not widescreen, even for YouTube. Let 1 / 3 of the resolution of the MinoHD Flip or Flip UltraHD. You do not hear that in his presentation, and you will not see the site (at least anywhere I can find.)

The video demos that you see on the Apple site are displayed in 290×220 resolution, so do not be surprised if they look decent. The device includes some sighted in camera effects that we will all grow up pretty quickly tire.

So, let's see. I can buy a Flip HD camcorder for about the same price that the Nano, and take Great video. Or I can buy an iPod nano, FM radio, counting my steps, make a movie rotten, and always having to buy phone.

Here are two excellent articles on how Flip got it right (and, implicitly, how Apple seems to be losing focus):
